Excellency Ms. Eleonora Mitrofanova, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of the Russian Federation to UNESCO, Excellencies, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, It is an honour to attend this opening ceremony of Cultures Beyond Borders, an initiative of the Solomon Mikhoels International Cultural Centre. I am very pleased this evening occurs under the patronage of UNESCO. This is an evening for respect and solidarity. An evening to celebrate creativity for peace. This, I believe, is the power of culture – the power to cross borders, to bring people together around shared feelings and common values, the power to strengthen the conviction in each of us that humanity is a single community, founded on equal dignity. Poetry is like a bird, it ignores all frontiers. These words are from Yevgeny Yevtushenko, the great Russian poet, whom we are honoured to welcome this evening. In his 1975 poem, “Once People,” Yevgeny Yevtushenko wrote, Those who have died have been born again in me, those who have not been born as yet cry out. My population is too large, beyond the strength of just one man- but then, a person would be incomplete if he contained no others. These words express the ties of humanity that bind us all together. The world is changing quickly, raising new questions for all societies about how to build new bridges of dialogue, how to make the most of diversity. Art has a special role here, as a source of creativity, as a wellspring of solidarity. Its power lies in the connections it forges between cultures, strengthening the foundations of unity on the basis of shared values. This idea lies at the heart of UNESCO’s mandate. As you know, our Constitution opens with words we never tire in repeating: Since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed. These words convey our conviction that it is not enough for peace to be decreed between governments, it must be nurtured through the dignity and rights of every man and woman, and it must be strengthened every day, through dialogue, through respect and understanding, through art and creativity. We have gathered, Ladies and Gentlemen, to share in this power of art. For this, let me thank once again the Delegation of the Russian Federation and all artists for this opportunity. After Concert: Excellencies, Ladies and gentlemen, This has been a stunning moment of music, and a wonderful moment for us all. I wish to thank once again all of the artists, who shared so much of their passion and so much of their talent with us this evening. It is now my honour to present the UNESCO 50th Anniversary-Five Continents Medal to Mr. Mikhail Gluz, Director General of the Solomon Mikhoels International Cultural Centre and Peoples' Artist of the Russian Federation -- in recognition of the leading work of the Centre in promoting cultural cooperation and exchanges, to deepen respect, mutual understanding and solidarity. We need this more than ever today, at this time of change and also uncertainty. I thank all those associated with the Centre and wish the Centre an excellent birthday and many more years ahead!
