"Bashkortostan - the pearl of Russia", an event that was celebrated at a large scale on the 1st of October at UNESCO was the second presentation conducted by the Republic of Bashkortostan at the Headquarters of the Organisation. A modular multimedia exhibition that reflects tourism capacity and natural, educational, scientific and cultural resources of the distinctive Russian region attracted great interest of visitors.
Two round tables were organized in the framework of the presentation on natural and cultural heritage of Bashkortostan and on region’s contribution to the educational Programmes of UNESCO.
The first meeting of experts was aimed at further promoting “Natural and Cultural Property of Ural-Batyr Land and the Bashkir Urals” Biosphere Reserve for inscription on UNESCO World Heritage List that has been already included on UNESCO’s Tentative List in 2012. Bashkir scientists made reports on their activities on the preservation of heritage, as well as on a close relationship between natural, tangible and intangible cultural heritage. The participants shared their views and received valuable advice of the international experts.
UNESCO experts praised the achievements made in the field of education in the Republic of Bashkortostan and marked out special activities of the Associated Schools and UNESCO Chairs. Three Bashkir gymnasiums and lyceums were solemnly awarded with certificates of UNESCO Associated Schools. The heads of secondary and higher educational institutions of Bashkortostan presented their innovative experiences and shared their plans for the future in their speeches. A discussion on the most important aspects of interaction of the region with the International Organization was held.
On the same day, the President of the Republic of Bashkortostan Mr Rustem Khamitov met with UNESCO Director-General Ms Irina Bokova. They enjoyed a warm friendly conversation about the experience of 15 years of participation in Bashkortostan in the UNESCO projects and prospects for future cooperation. Following the meeting, a joint communiqué reflecting the main directions of further cooperation on the conservation of natural and cultural heritage, participation in international scientific and educational Programmes was signed.
The presentation of the Republic of Bashkortostan was followed by a gala concert. Bashkir artists, art and folk ensembles, soloists of the Opera and Ballet Theatre – all those who continue the traditions of their legendary fellow-countrymen Feodor Shaliapine and Rudolf Nureyev - aroused admiration of UNESCO and Parisian audience. One of the true heroes of the evening was the famous fashion designer Vyacheslav Zaitsev whose new collection has been jointly prepared with the Bashkir masters and was also presented at the concert.
The Day of Bashkortostan was celebrated in the framework of the cultural program of the 192nd Session of the Executive Council of the Organisation, which significantly expanded the geographic coverage of visitors and spectators of the event. Another presentation of a Russian region became a success and earned praise at the International Cultural Organisation.
